We are pleased to be able to be able to now offer the Comprehensive Pain Assessment  (CPA) within our Wellington Clinics.  The CPA is a multi-disciplinary assessment from an orthopaedic Specialist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and a Psychologist.  It provides a detailed report on an individual’s status from a medical, physical and psychological basis and makes recommendations on the most appropriate rehabilitation strategy. The Value of a Current Job in Back Pain Rehabilitation

Summary of abstract presented at NZ Orthopaedic surgeons Conference - Queenstown 2005
Chris Hoffman, Chris Gregg, Adam Cornett

Purpose — To determine if job availability at initial assessment altered the return to work (RTW) recommendations and six month work outcomes for ACC claimants undergoing an activity based rehabilitation program at The Back Institute

Conclusion — Patients that present for rehab without a job yield similar RTW recommendations at discharge but poorer work outcomes at six months when compared to patients who remain in work or temporarily off work during their rehabilitation.

Outcomes: Percentage in Work

At Assessment   At Discharge   At 6 Months
 In Work   100%  100%  95%
 Off Work   0%  70%  65%
 No Job  0%  29%  54%

Summary — This study highlights the importance of job availability in achieving robust return to work outcomes. It is recommended that patients with a back injury attempt to remain in work on either modified duty or reduced hours to improve the likelihood of a durable return to work after rehabilitation.
