Our Back Institute programme provides comprehensive, evidence based treatment for people that are suffering from acute and chronic back and neck pain.

Whether it is a sudden severe episode of back pain or an ongoing chronic problem, back pain can have a real impact on your ability to work, remain active and enjoy life. Finding a solution to help can be a challenge in itself and a lot of people can quickly become confused, frustrated and lose confidence in their ability to get on top of the problem.

Back Institute programme’s Canadian roots

The Back Institute programme was initially developed in Canada over 35 years ago to provide a practical solution for people with ongoing back pain. The treatment philosophy is simple – the more you understand your back problem, and the exercises that you can do to help control your symptoms and remain active, the more you will feel in control of the problem. The concept was a success and The Canadian Back Institute has developed to become one of North America’s largest spine care programmes with over 130 clinics throughout Canada.

Here in New Zealand, The Back Institute programme is a core services within our TBI Health clinics. We have a very experienced clinical team of Orthopaedic Specialists, Physiotherapists, Exercise Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Clinical Psychologists that specialise in the treatment of back pain and we can help you to develop a series of gentle exercises that will improve your pain and progress your activity within our fully equipped rehabilitation clinics.

Your initial assessment will be with a registered Physiotherapist that is trained in the assessment of spinal pain. On your first appointment your Physiotherapist will be able to explain the cause of your back problem and initiate your rehabilitation programme. If required, the Physiotherapist may refer you to other members of the health professional team to ensure you get appropriate and effective treatment. If your back or neck injury is due to an accident our Physiotherapist can initiate your ACC claim for you and commence treatment immediately. While no referral is required, we welcome GP or specialist referrals if available

As part of an international back pain management programme, our clinical team are actively involved in clinical spine research and we continually develop our programmes to help improve the treatment of acute and chronic back and neck pain problems.
