What is the TBI Health Early Intervention Programme?

The TBI Health Early Intervention Programme is a quick response intervention to address pain or discomfort before it may lead to injury. It will help to support you to manage and reduce your symptoms whilst remaining active and at work.
The focus is on self-management to empower you to take control.

Who is it suitable for?

The programme is suitable for workers experiencing a recent onset of symptoms, or a flare-up of existing symptoms, which are impacting on their ability to perform activities at work or causing discomfort whilst at work.

Who is the programme NOT suitable for?

The programme is not designed for treating long-standing (chronic) pain or for anyone requiring medical attention such as bleeding, loss of consciousness or suspected medical event (e.g. heart attack).

If I have pain or discomfort, do I have an injury?

Not always. In many circumstances, pain or discomfort develops without an event and is the body giving an early warning sign that the muscles or joints are under stress. However, if not addressed early, this can lead to, or increase the risk of injury.

What causes pain or discomfort?

Often it is a combination of many factors that result in pain or discomfort. This can include factors such as:

  • Poor general health and fitness for work
  • Stress (work or outside of work)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Repetitive or sustained tasks
  • Manual handling demands of the job and individual work techniques/posture
  • Perceived lack of support from supervisors, managers and co workers
  • Incorrect or lack of appropriate furniture or equipment
  • And many more…

Often it is “the straw that breaks the camel’s back”.

What to expect and who carries this out?

If your employer has referred you for an assessment at your workplace, the Occupational Therapist or Occupational Health Physiotherapist will arrange a time to meet with you. At the assessment, the therapist will gain an understanding of your symptoms and what factors (both at work and outside of work) might be contributing. Ensure you have a suitable place at work for this to take place.

Following this, the therapist will assess your work environment and how you are working then provide advice and recommendations to help you manage and alleviate your symptoms, specific to you and your work. This will then be fed back to your manager so they can help support you too. A follow up visit may also be recommended.

How long will this take?

An initial workplace assessment can take between 45 minutes and 1 hour. We recommend booking an hour in your diary to allow for uninterrupted assessment time.

An initial early intervention physiotherapy session takes around 40 minutes. Subsequent follow up sessions take around 20 minutes.

What do I do if I am unable to attend the booked session?

We understand that things can come up and appointments need to be rescheduled. If you are unable to attend a scheduled appointment, please contact the therapist as soon as possible. Failing to cancel an appointment without at least 2 hours’ notice will incur a late cancellation charge.

How many sessions?

Worksite visits:

  • 1 initial assessment and 1 follow up contact (email/call)
  • At times equipment is needed to be installed by the provider and this occurs at your worksite.


  • Usually up to 3 sessions however this depends on your employer and recommendations from the treating physiotherapist.
Can I get equipment?
  • The provider assessing you will determine if any appropriate equipment needs are required based on your specific needs and your workstation setup.
  • Recommended equipment will be communicated to your employer and either be arranged by your employer or the assessing therapist.
What if the symptoms remain after the intervention?

If early intervention has not helped to relieve or enable you to self-manage your symptoms after implementing the recommendations made, then your symptoms can continue to be managed by your GP and/or the Wellbeing team within your workplace?

If symptoms continue it may be that early intervention is no longer an appropriate route of intervention.

How do I book an EI session?

This can vary depending on workplace and it would be beneficial to ask your manager or workplace Health and Safety Team about the internal referral process.

Some common routes of doing this are;

  • You can self-refer on our website and select “Assessment Type” > “Workstation/Site Assessment”
  • Alternatively follow internal processes within your company. Early Intervention is not the right service for you.
