TBI Health’s Community Therapies team has been dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of those living and working in residential care facilities and retirement villages for over 15 years.
We have a range of services to suit you:
Functional Rehabilitation
Our clinicians work with residents to identify and practice safer and easier ways for them to complete their daily activities – including activities such as dressing, transfers, mobility and hobbies. This leads to the resident feeling more confident and empowered and caregivers having more time to complete other tasks.
Prescription of Mobility and Functional Aids
Our clinicians are skilled in prescribing, sourcing, setting up, and educating both residents and facility staff on the correct use of assistive aids and equipment. This may include bathroom and dressing aids, transfer equipment, mobility aids, eating aids and seating and positioning devices. Having appropriate equipment in place optimises resident safety and independence.
Rehabilitation Following Injury, Surgery, Medical Event, or Illness
Our Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists work closely with residents who have had injuries, surgery, medical events and illnesses to promote recovery, restore function, enhance independence and help manage long term conditions.
Exercise Prescription
Our Physiotherapists are highly trained and experienced in prescribing individualised exercise programmes and running group exercise classes to improve and maintain residents’ physical fitness, strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and mental wellbeing. We also offer fall prevention exercise programmes based on the research-proven Otago Exercise Programme.
Neurological Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy
Our Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists provide comprehensive care for residents who have suffered a stroke or have neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neuron Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, or Ataxia. Our interventions focus on improving mobility, coordination, strength, pain, posture, participation in usual activities and improving quality of life.
ACC-Funded Services for Injured Residents
Fully ACC-Funded Training for Independence Rehabilitation Services
If any residents have accepted ACC injury claims and their independence, confidence, or participation in daily activities has been affected by their injuries, we can request approval for a fully-funded ACC Training for Independence programme for them to help them return to pre-injury levels of independence.
If approved by ACC, our team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Counsellors, Dietitians, Speech-Language Therapists, and Social Workers, will plan and provide a rehabilitation program at the residential care facility to meet the resident’s specific needs.
To request a review to check whether someone meets the criteria for ACC-funded Training for Independence services, please email tbireferrals@tbihealth.co.nz

Partially ACC-Funded Allied Health Services
Should any of your residents sustain an injury and require physiotherapy or hand therapy, we can access partial funding for this via the ACC Allied Health Services contract. Please email tbireferrals@tbihealth.co.nz
Staff Education
Moving and Handling Training
Our Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Vocational Consultants can provide high quality moving and handling training for your facility’s clinical and non-clinical staff. We work with you to identify the moving and handling risks and training needs of each staff group then provide tailored moving and handling and injury prevention workshops.
